OnFinality Customer Case Study: Dot Ordinals

OnFinality Customer Case Study: Dot Ordinals

OnFinality is a blockchain infrastructure platform that saves web3 builders time and makes developers’ lives easier. We deliver scalable API endpoints for the biggest blockchain networks and empower developers to automatically test, deploy, scale and monitor your own blockchain nodes within minutes.

In this Customer Case Study series we hone in on how Dot Ordinals used OnFinality to elevate and enhance their project via OnFinality’s hosting services

Summary

Dot Ordinals used OnFinality’s Dedicated Nodes to reliably run their application at a time where public RPC services struggled to handle heavy traffic during their app launch.

“OnFinality’s node platform and professional team has proven invaluable.”

Background

Dot Ordinals is the gateway to Polkadot Inscriptions, where people can create, browse, and trade ordinal inscriptions on the Polkadot network.

Dot Ordinals launched their mainnet app on 20th December 2023 to much fanfare, bringing a marked increase of transactions to the Polkadot blockchain

What are Inscriptions

Inscriptions work by embedding information directly on-chain, commonly used to create NFTs on networks where they aren’t natively supported. The interest in inscriptions originally began on Bitcoin and has more recently expanded to other networks including Polkadot.

The Challenge Dot Ordinals Faced

The Dot Ordinals app used various public RPC services, or shared blockchain nodes, to communicate with the Polkadot network - for example to create and trade ordinals. Users began to experience issues using the Dot Ordinals application, as these shared node services struggled under massively increased Polkadot activity caused by the inscriptions.

It was critical for the Dot Ordinals team to quickly find uninterrupted access to the Polkadot Network to ride the momentum of their product launch.

Further complicating matters, teams across the world were winding down for the upcoming holiday season so finding a solution might prove difficult.

How OnFinality Helped Dot Ordinals

Dedicated Nodes

OnFinality provided Dot Ordinals with self service Dedicated Polkadot Nodes, deployed in a few clicks and fully synced within minutes thanks to Lightning Restore.

Now with their own dedicated access to the Polkadot Network, Dot Ordinals were no longer hindered by failures in public RPC services.

Elastic RPC Nodes

At the same time, OnFinality provided Dot Ordinals with unrestricted access to OnFinality’s Polkadot RPC Service as a backup.

Taylored Service

The OnFinality team worked proactively through the Christmas break to monitor and adjust Dot Ordinal’s nodes for milestones like their marketplace launch.

The Results

“The nodes were provided quickly and reliably by OnFinality, allowing us to focus on other areas of our marketplace. They provided fast, professional support during a time where many teams were unavailable. We look forward to continuing to work together in the future.” - Dot Ordinals
